The best new hotels in the world opening in 2017

There's no better way to beat the January blues than booking in your next holiday.

For anyone with serious wanderlust, these hotel openings need to be on your radar.

From a new paradise on the southern Cambodian coast to a design hotel in hip Hamburg, via a chic new foodie stay in Devon, these are the ones to add to your wishlist.

Six Senses Cambodia

The Cambodian Coast is one of 2017’s hottest new travel destinations, so it’s no wonder the rapidly expanding Six Senses group is opening a new resort there in May. Set on the 30 acre island of Krabey on the southern coast – now being dubbed the ‘Cambodian Riviera’, it will comprise of 40 sumptuous villas with private plunge pools, an alfresco waterside cinema and all the diving, snorkelling and kayaking you could wish for. The Ned, London

Nick Jones strikes again with The Ned, but this time the Soho House entrepreneur is targeting the City suits with his hotel-cum-members-club. £200 million has been spent on transforming the former Midland Bank headquarters in Poultry with 252 rooms, eight restaurants, numerous bars and a Cowshed spa. There will also be a rooftop pool, a boxing ring and a yoga and pilates studio.

Sir Nikolai, Hamburg

Berlin better watch out – Hamburg is looking to steal its crown as Germany’s coolest city. And in February the SIR hotel group will open a 94-room hotel in an old mercantile mansion on the Nikolaifleet canal in Hamburg’s Old Town. It has a subterranean spa with a swimming pool that appears to bleed into the canal and a restaurant called Izakaya, which will serve Nikkei cuisine. The ideal base for a city break in 2017.

The Hoxton, Paris

The Hoxton group adds to its empire with a May opening in Paris, the second in Europe. Located in the 2nd arrondisement, it will be housed in a 16th century building designed by Etienne Rivie, counsellor to King Louis XIV. The 172 rooms will show off the Hoxton’s signature style with a Parisian twist and will be joined by a restaurant, speakeasy, café-cum-tabac and The Apartment for events.

Henrietta Hotel, London

The team behind Chinatown’s Experimental Cocktail Bar is opening its first London hotel, after the success of its Parisian sister hotel. A sumptuous boutique number in Covent Garden, the Henrietta will have 18 bedrooms dressed with handpainted wallpaper, upholstered headboards and marble details. The beating heart of the hotel will be its eponymous restaurant, a chic fusion of ornate Victorian and sleek Art Deco led by London's star chef Ollie Dabbous.

The Whitby, New York

Design Hotels

This second New York opening from the Firmdale group is set to be another stonker, with Kit Kemp at the design helm. Taking her colourful creative vision to Midtown this time, The Whitby will be spread over 15 floors, with the entire top floor making up The Whitby Suitem a spectacular two-bedder with huge terraces facing uptown and downtown. In addition there’ll be a destination bar, an orangery and a 130-seater cinema.

Lympstone Manor, Devon

East Devon is trending. And helping to set seal its fate is the spring opening of Lympstone Manor. A new project from chef Michael Caines, it’s set in a Grade II listed Georgian mansion with views over the Exe Estuary. It will have 21 contemporary bedrooms (all named after local birds) and a restaurant from the Michelin-starred chef. A vineyard is planned for the hotel, so expect wine tasting to become a feature.

Artist Residence, Oxfordshire

The award-winning duo behind Artist Residence group, Justin and Charlie Salisbury, has announced a fourth site (to add to Pimlico, Penzance and Brighton) in Oxfordshire opening at the end of February. They are refurbishing an old honey stone pub to become a cosy restaurant with rooms, with their signature eccentric style of reclaimed pieces, funky artwork and a snazzy bar they hope will be as popular with the locals as guests.

Wild Coast Tented Lodge, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka looks set to keep trending as a destination well into 2017 with a flurry of new openings. Cream of the crop for nature hunters is Wild Coast Tented Lodge, which will open in Yala National Park in October. The third venture from family-owned Resplendent Ceylon, it sits on a pristine beach on the fringe of the national park and will suit those who love both luxury and wild safari camping. It will feature 28 ‘cocoon suites’ with jungle views, freestanding cooper tubs and four poster beds. Four of the beach-facing suites will have private plunge pools. Private vehicles will whisk guests off on safari tours to spot elephants and leopards with days bookended by swims and sundowners.

Brown Hotel, Jerusalem

Tel Aviv is no longer getting all the attention. Brown hotels are expanding to the Holy City this year in a 19th century villa in the downtown district, bringing it to the attention of design lovers around the world. The plush 23-room boutique hotel will have a rooftop terrace, a rooftop spa and jacuzzi - all just a five minute walk from the Old City.
