Health-conscious millennials are driving the natural wine industry

Natural wine is enjoying a surge in popularity thanks to consumer interest in health and wellbeing, according to one expert behind a dedicated online shop.

Guy Kordova, from Woolwich, launches Pure Wine this week — a website that sells only natural wines made from organic or biodynamically farmed grapes. The wines have no additives and minimal processing.

Mr Kordova, 35, was inspired to start his business after struggling to find natural wine to enjoy at home. The site will offer more than 140 varieties, with prices ranging from about £9 to £65 a bottle.

He said the growing popularity of natural wine was due to people being more health conscious. “At the moment, only people who know about natural wine know where to get hold of it,” he said.

“There are so many benefits, mainly that you know exactly what is in the product and that nothing is added. It is purer wine. People are more health conscious now, and that is a huge selling point. I don’t want to say it is a healthier wine, but it has fewer chemicals.”

Organic wine merchant Jacques Frelin told industry publication Harpers: “Millennials are responsible consumers who enjoy finding out the origins of the products they consume.”

Data from market researcher Nielsen suggests sales of organic wine were up 22 per cent in 2017, compared with less than three per cent growth in non-organic wine.
