And so primer sits at the bottom of my make-up bag. Unloved. Unused. Vaguely considered but ultimately rejected. But it’s autumn and skin is starting to object to the heating and the cutting morning air. It demands support.
YSL’s Top Secrets Instant Moisture Glow is a primer by another, better, name, and it’s a lovely, embracing product. Primers can feel paste-like and heavy; a strange glaze. But this, in its chic black-and-gold tube, is a beautiful, innocent pink. Immediately refreshing, it wakes skin as much as coats it. Intensely hydrating, it delivers an on-the-spot satiny, lasting finish. A delicate airbrush effect makes this ideal for make-up-free days when you still want a modicum of subtle polish.
The blurring appeal is why this goo is so marvellous — Polyfilling the infinitesimal craters, pores and pocks and facilitating the smooth application of a base or concealer. It clings to make-up, prolonging its wear, lighting it from beneath with its high-tech ‘backlit complex’.
