Aldi has revealed that there’s an active police investigation after recalling a food product due to concerns of “tampering.”

The popular retailer is urging shoppers not to eat Village Bakery 8 Tortilla Wraps White purchased from Aldi, which have best-before dates up to April 29, 2024.

Aldi informed shoppers they’re recalling wraps “because this product may have been contaminated with pieces of metal”.

“As a precautionary measure, our supplier is recalling Village Bakery 8 Tortilla Wraps White because this product may have been contaminated with pieces of metal.

“Anyone who bought this product should return it to their nearest store for a full refund. We would like to reassure our customers that no other Aldi products are affected and apologise for any inconvenience caused,” a statement read on the Aldi recall page.

A poster announcing the recall also said: “ We apologise this did not meet our usual high standards and thank you for your co-operation.”

Aldi first sounded the alarm over the potentially contaminated products back in March, and has now released a fresh warning so people avoid eating the products. The retailers have also removed the products from sale in stores.

It’s unclear at this point what metal the tortillas were potentially contaminated with; however, Brits are being urged to practise caution and refrain from eating the wraps.

The wraps, manufactured by Signature Flatbreads UK, come in 8x62g packets. No other food items sold in Aldi or manufactured by Signature Flatbreads UK have been affected.

A spokesperson also confirmed that there is an ongoing police investigation but was unable to share further details.

“All our products go through rigorous safety and quality checks. We are recalling this product as a precautionary measure. As there is an active police investigation we are not able to comment any further on this matter at this time."

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) also confirmed that Signature Flatbreads UK is "working with the relevant food and police agencies to investigate the cause of the contamination".
