As Ross in sitcom Friends he was watched by 52 million people in the US in the last episode. For his London directorial stage debut the audience figure was nearer 80.

David Schwimmer, 45, directed Dry Ice, a monologue by writer and performer Sabrina Mahfouz at the Bush Theatre in Shepherd’s Bush last night.

The play centres on a stripper and takes place in the world of strip clubs. Schwimmer met Mahfouz, 27, through his wife Zoe Buckman, who she knew from their time waitressing at Mayfair bar Cuckoo Club.

Mahfouz worked as a waitress in many bars, including strip clubs, to pay her way through her classics and English literature degree at King’s College.

Schwimmer said: “I’ve been a fan of her writing for a long time. She sent me the script for Dry Ice. I really don’t want to take any credit for it — she’s such a gifted performer and her instincts are so good.”

New York-based Schwimmer married photographer Buckman, from Hackney, in 2010 and they had a daughter Cleo last May.

He added: “We don’t have a permanent place here but we’ll be looking to get a flat. We’re here quite a bit.” Dry Ice runs until Saturday.
