Method actor Eli Wallach, who starred in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, has died aged 98.

Wallach, whose career began in 1956 and spanned around 60 years, was known for his wide range. He won an honorary Oscar in 2011 and was arguably at his best when playing parts in Westerns.

He played the bandit Tuco in Sergio Leone's 1966 classic Spaghetti Western The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, appearing opposite Clint Eastwood.

He also played the bandit Calvera in The Magnificent Seven, giving what many critics regard as the stand-out performance of an illustrious career.

Born in Brooklyn in an Italian-dominated neighbourhood, Wallach was the son of Polish Jewish immigrants.

He graduated with a degree in education from the University of Texas, where he also learned to ride horses - a skill that would go on to serve him well in his future career.

He went on to study acting at the Neighbourhood Playhouse Actors Studio before the outbreak of World War Two.

After completing war service, Wallach made his stage debut in New York in 1945, and appeared in London in the 1954 play, The Teahouse of the August Moon.

He was married to actress Anne Jackson, with whom he had two daughters.
