Michael Schumacher is no longer in a coma and could make a full recovery within three years, one of his doctors has said.

The seven time Formula One champion, 45, is recovering at home in Switzerland after his skiing accident in December last year.

The German driver was with his 14-year-old son in the French Alps when he fell, hitting the side of his head on a rock, cracking his helmet.

Jean-Francois Payen, a doctor at the hospital in Grenoble, France, who treated Schumacher for six months, said he had visited his family to track his patient’s progress.

Predicting a convalescence of one to three years, he said: “We hope, but we have to give him time. Life after a head injury is punctuated by stages."

Last month Schumacher's manager Sabine Kehm warned there was "a long and difficult road ahead" for the star as he left hospital to recuperate at home.
