Star Wars fans have been given a sneak peak of the upcoming The Force Awakens film as producers released the long-awaited trailer.

This year's Star Wars Celebration (an annual Star Wars fan event) was streamed live on Starwars.com from California's Anaheim Convention Center.

Director JJ Abrams and producer Kathleen Kennedy introduced the new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The new trailer brings a host of fresh footage, including the aftermath of an epic battle, the charred remains of Darth Vader's helmet, and the new Stormtrooper designs.

Fans got the first glimpse of new Sith Lord Kylo Ren, rumoured to be the character played by Girls actor Adam Driver, and there were more glimpses of ball droid BB8 in action.

Most exciting of all for fans is the return of Harrison Ford as Han Solo and his Wookie sidekick Chewbacca, who closes the trailer out with his trademark roar.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is released in cinemas on December 18
