Armed police officers patrolled inside a crown court today as the trial of a man accused of murdering two policewomen began.

Dale Cregan, 29, is charged with killing Pc Nicola Hughes, 23, and Pc Fiona Bone, 32, in a gun and grenade attack in Hattersley, Greater Manchester, in September last year. He is also charged with the murder of father and son David and Mark Short last May.

Up to 150 police officers, many armed, were deployed at Preston crown court and in the nearby streets.

Cregan is being tried with nine other defendants, who are charged with helping or taking part in one of the four murders, firearms offences or assisting an offender. All of them have denied all charges.
