An armed man had to be wrestled to the ground by police officers after he threatened to open fire at staff and customers in a kebab shop in Tulse Hill.

In dramatic scenes at 4am this morning, the 41-year-old man entered the fast-food joint in Water Lane and threatened to shoot those inside.

He briefly left the building but returned shortly after police were called.

Officers managed to restrain and arrest him, recovering the firearm and six rounds of live ammunition.

The man was subsequently taken to a south London hospital. He is described as being in a "non-life-threatening condition" by police.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

Chief Superintendent Matt Bell, borough commander of Lambeth, said: "The unarmed officers who tackled this suspect showed incredible bravery and put their lives on the line in order to protect the public.

"Incidents such as this demonstrate the lengths that Metropolitan Police officers go to on a daily basis in the fight against crime."
