Armed police have arrested a 20-year-old man in north London and a 21-year-old man in Birmingham on suspicion of being involved in terrorism.

The pair are being held "on suspicion of being involved in the commission, preparation and instigation of terrorism", the Metropolitan Police said.

Officers from the Met Police Counter Terrorism Command were supported by officers from the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit and the Met Police Firearms Command for the operation.

They made the arrest in north London at around 2.50pm and the other in south-east Birmingham at approximately 4.30pm on Tuesday.

The men are now both being held in custody at a police station in the capital.

Searches at the addresses in London and Birmingham are ongoing, police said.
