A man was killed and two others injured in a triple stabbing after a fight erupted on a street in east London early today.

The victim, aged in his 20s, was stabbed opposite a primary school in Barking about an hour after hundreds of young people left a nearby birthday party.

Police said officers were called to reports of a man lying in the road suffering stab wounds in Movers Lane at 1am.

Paramedics and officers attended and gave emergency first aid but the man died at the scene. Two other young men, in their late teens or early 20s, were found near-by also suffering stab wounds.

Both were taken to hospital where their condition is described as stable today.

A huge cordon protected streets around the scene as forensic teams carried out a search of the area.

One resident in Movers Lane, a father of two young children, described hearing “shouting and a commotion” at around 1am.

His wife then saw a man on a push bike wearing a loose fitting balaclava riding quickly away from the scene and then heard a car speeding off.

The resident, who did not want to be named, said: “ I heard shouting and a banging. It could have been an argument or the stabbed man trying to get help, it’s hard to tell now. I didn’t think much of it at the time, it’s always quite noisy around here.”

His wife said she saw a boy cycling off, adding : “He came past a couple of times and then cycled off really fast. He was wearing a balaclava covering his face. I thought he might just have robbed someone.

“Soon after all the police and emergency services turned up. We saw all the lights and there was a lot of activity. “

The attack took place on the corner of Movers Lane and Ripple Road, opposite a local primary school.

Other people described hundreds of young people spilling out of a birthday party at the Ripple Centre, a community centre, a few hundred yards from the scene of the fatal stabbing.

One woman said: “I was driving back home around midnight and there were lots of young people spilling out onto the streets. They looked quite rowdy.”

Police were today contacting the dead man’s family.

The incident comes as police are battling to contain a spate of stabbings and knife murders in London this year.

So far a total of 29 young men under the age of 25 have been murdered in the capital. Ten teenagers have been stabbed to death.

The attack also comes after a spate of violent incidents in neighbouring Newham which are suspected to have gang links.

Five people have been injured in a series of stabbings and shootings in the borough in just four days over the weekend prompting the local police chief Chief Superintendent Ade Adelekan to issue calls for calm in the local community.

He said : “While it may seem that violence in the borough has suddenly increased, it should be understood that these are separate incidents that are not expected to form part of a continuing pattern.”
