More than 150 allegations of sex abuse have been made against BBC employees in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal, it emerged today.

Of the 81 accused, half are currently working for the corporation, according to new figures. The 152 “allegations of a sexual nature” have been made since October 3 last year, when the scandal erupted.

The majority of the allegations relate to people who have died or those who have not worked for the BBC for many years, including 48 about Savile, who died aged 84 in October 2011.

Of the complaints made, 30 involve alleged physical sexual abuse by 23 current members of staff.

According to figures released following a Freedom of Information request, 25 recent allegations involving current employees have been reported to the police, the majority of which resulted in no further action being taken.

Five remain outstanding, while three which resulted in no police action are under investigation at the BBC. Fifteen were not deemed criminal in nature and were investigated internally, resulting in one person receiving an informal warning and two losing their jobs. Two remain under investigation.

“The BBC has been appalled by the allegations of harassment and abuse that have emerged since the Savile scandal broke,” said a spokesman.

“We have launched a series of reviews that aim to understand if there are any issues with the current culture of the BBC, or the historic culture and practices from as far back as 1965, to see what lessons can be learned to prevent this happening again.”
