The family of missing teenager Becky Watts today said they are “devastated” after human remains were found by police.

Detectives searching for the 16-year-old said “body parts” were discovered at a house in Bristol after new information was received last night.

In a statement today, Becky’s mother Tania Watts, grandmother Pat Watts and brother Daniel Watts said: “We are devastated to be told of this latest development.

“We are at an utter loss to understand why anyone would want to hurt our beautiful Becky in such a brutal way.”

Following the discovery, three men and two women were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Hours earlier, a man, 28, and a woman, 21, were arrested on suspicion of the kidnap and murder of the GCSE student. They were first arrested on Saturday on suspicion of kidnapping the teenager.

The family statement added: “Whilst there are people in custody, none of whom are connected to the Watts family, we will not be making any further comment and we ask that our privacy is respected at this horrific time.”

Becky lived with her father Darren Galsworthy and stepmother, Angie-Mae Galsworthy, in the St George area of Bristol. She left the home on February 19 with her phone, laptop and tablet but did not tell friends or family where she was going. She was reported missing the next day at 4pm.

Detective Superintendent Mike Courtiour, of Avon and Somerset police, said today: “As a result of new information received late last night, we attended a house at Barton Court in the Barton Hill area of Bristol.

The information suggested that Becky’s body had been cut up and a search at the new location resulted in the discovery of body parts.” He said formal identification had not been completed, but Becky’s family had been informed.

Officers yesterday seized a black Vauxhall Zafira. They were also searching the student’s home and a house in Southmead, close to where the black car was found.
