A teenager has been charged following an altercation which sparked panic in a packed south east London shopping centre on Boxing Day.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of common assault, violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon. He is set to appear at Bromley Magistrates' Court on Monday.

The boy is one of two arrested following an altercation at Intu shopping centre in Bromley, formerly known as The Glades, on Boxing Day.

Shoppers were left fearing for their lives after a man was reportedly seen brandishing a 2ft-long machete.

Armed police attended the scene about 3.45pm on Saturday and found a boy with a head injury. Two knives were also discovered in the area.

A video posted on Twitter showed shoppers, including families, screaming and running out of the centre.

Keith Moon, 35, an app developer, was out shopping with his wife when he suddenly saw people running in a "chaotic" scene.

He later saw a male youth in handcuffs and bleeding from the head being led away by police, who were carrying a 2ft-long machete.

Metropolitan Police earlier said: "Detectives are seeking to trace a number of youths who ran off from the scene shortly after the incident."

Eyewitnesses on Twitter described scenes of "panic".

Nelson Adeosun, 27, who works in television, said: "It was really busy because of the Boxing Day sales and there was a mass exodus of people on the ground floor. They were shouting and running.

The second boy arrested, also 16, was held on suspicion of affray, police said.
