A teenager has appeared in court charged with the murder of a man who had not been seen for several days.

Paul Jefferies, 52, was found dead at his home in Mayfield, East Sussex, last week and police described his cause of death as “multiple injuries”.

The 17-year-old suspect from Crowborough, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of killing Mr Jeffries on February 23.

He appeared via videolink at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody to appear at Lewes Crown Court on Thursday.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Mr Jefferies, 52, was found dead by police who called at his home in Coggins Mill Lane on Thursday after concerns had been expressed that he had not been seen for a few days.

"A post mortem found that Mr Jefferies had died from multiple injuries."

A 17-year-old girl from Eastbourne, a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old boy, both from Crowborough, who were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender have been bailed until April 21, pending further enquiries.
