A teenage boy has died after being involved in a car crash while driving away from a fight in south London.

Detectives said a group of youths pelted the vehicle with projectiles before it crashed into the post in Brockley just before 3.15pm on Saturday.

The boy, 17, was found in the green Vauxhall Corsa with critical injuries and died in hospital two hours later, police confirmed today.

Two other males, of unknown age, were in the car and had minor cuts to their hands.

Murder detectives are investigating and have arrested four men, aged 19, 20, 21 and 23, who were today being held in custody.

Scotland Yard said on Saturday that officers were called to reports of a fight and stabbing in St Norbert Road, where the car crashed.

The three males got into the Vauxhall and drove off following the incident, police said.

In an updated statement release today, a Met Police spokesman said: “At this early stage, it is believed that a group of youths attacked the vehicle by throwing items at it as it made off from St Norbert Road.

“The vehicle subsequently collided with a lamppost as it headed towards Loampit Vale.”

Police said a post-mortem is due to take place this afternoon.

Detective Chief Inspector Luke Marks, from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, today launched an appeal for witnesses.

He said: "The incident occurred mid-afternoon and there were a number of people around who may have witnessed what happened or the events leading up to the death of this teenage boy.

“We are still trying to understand the sequence of events and it is vital that those who know what may have happened come forward and assist us with our inquiry.”

Anyone with information should call the police incident room on 020 8358 0400 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
