A three-year-old boy has died after being bitten by a dog in Essex.

The child was was airlifted to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge after he was bitten in house in Parker Way, Halstead, but later died from his injuries.

Police officers and paramedics raced to the scene following the incident, which happened at 5.40pm yesterday.

A 29-year-old woman from Halstead was arrested on suspicion of allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control injuring a person, and today remained in police custody.

The dog was seized by police officers and is in kennels.

An Essex police spokeswoman said: "A woman has been arrested following an incident where a child was bitten by a dog in a property in Parker Way in Halstead at around 5.40pm on Thursday.

"The boy was taken to hospital where he sadly died from his injuries.

"A 29-year-old woman from Halstead has been arrested for allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control injuring a person. She remains in police custody.

"The dog has been seized by police and placed in kennels."
