A woman, also in her 40s, was also taken to hospital for treatment to a stab injury but was not seriously injured.

Police say the lead-up to the stabbing followed a clash in nearby Code Street.

However police were called to Brick Lane which is renowned for its restaurants and is a popular area with tourists from around the world.

Two men – aged 39 and 42 – were arrested on suspicion of GBH with intent and drug offences.

Both have been charged with two counts of GBH and are due to appear at Thames Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
