Two brothers jailed for a brutal revenge attack following an argument have been convicted of murder almost six years after their victim died.

Derrell Callender, 26, and Dwight Callender, 28, were sentenced to 35 years each in prison for two counts of attempted murder in December 2009.

One of the brothers’ two victims, Johnson Ndjoli, suffered horrific injuries after being crushed by a van, shot and stabbed in Sanford Street, New Cross, on April 21, 2009.

He died on January 5, 2010, as a result of his injuries and respiratory failure.

The second victim, who was then 19, was also run over and knocked unconscious, but suffered no lasting injuries.

The brothers were on Wednesday convicted of murder after a retrial and will be sentenced later at the Old Bailey.

The court previously heard the victims had been involved in a confrontation with the younger attacker, who then called his older brother to help him take revenge.

Dwight Callender collected his brother in a hired white van and they drove to Sanford Street.

The brothers then fled the scene after shots were fired at the victims by people they knew - who to this day have not been identified.

Dwight Callender sped towards his victims in the van, crushing Mr Ndjoli against railings and running over the second man.

Mr Ndjoli suffered devastating brain injuries and as he lay unconscious and bleeding, he was shot in the buttocks and stabbed in the neck by other men.

The van the brothers fled in was found on fire two days later.

The brothers were each later found guilty of two counts of attempted murder and were both handed prison sentences of 25 years and 10 years to be served consecutively - a total of 35 years each.

Det Sgt Paul Davis said: “Johnson suffered horrific crush injuries during the attack that would have left him dependent on specialist medical care for the rest of his life.

“He sadly lost his battle for life the month after the Callender brothers were convicted of trying to kill him and his friend.

“The conduct of these defendants is in stark contrast to the dignity and restraint shown by Johnson's family during what has been a lengthy and difficult legal process.

“It is only right the Callenders were prosecuted for murder and I am pleased a jury has today found them guilty.”
