A carer has been detained indefinitely for strangling a "caring" and "deeply religious" grandmother in her own home, police said.

Felix Gutierrez-Cortez, 34, killed Anna Maria Thomas at the house they shared in Wandsworth, south west London, in December 2013.

He was today given an indeterminate sentence in a secure facility under the Mental Health Act.

It came after he was found guilty of her manslaughter by diminished responsibility at the Old Bailey on March 4.

The court was told how 61-year-old Ms Thomas had given him a place to stay in exchange for Gutierrez-Cortez acting as her carer.

Her body was found in a bedroom covered in a duvet with a pillow placed under her head on the evening of Tuesday December 10 after the defendant called 999.

Gutierrez-Cortez was subsequently arrested and sectioned under the Mental Health Act while he awaited trial.

He initially claimed he found the victim dead when he returned home that day and had covered her with a quilt.

The defendant later changed his story to say she regularly became unconscious during meditation and that he had stayed in the lounge for two days while she meditated in the spare bedroom.

But a post-mortem revealed that she was strangled and had been dead for some days before the lodger had alerted emergency services.

After his conviction, investigating officer Detective Inspector Andy Rees said: "I am very grateful to the friends and neighbours of Anna Maria who assisted officers with their inquiries.

"Our investigations demonstrated that she was a caring mother and grandmother and a deeply religious woman with a wide circle of friends who will miss her deeply - I hope the conviction today provides them with a measure of comfort."
