Detectives investigating the murder of a father shot trying to protect his family revealed today they are hunting for the driver of a silver car seen speeding from the scene.

Carlton Ned, 41, died after he tried to prevent killers from forcing their way into the bedroom of his home in Thornton Heath a year ago this month.

The salesman was hit in the chest after gunmen burst into his house at 2.40am and then smashed their way into the room where he and his wife Donna, 51, were hiding.

The attackers, who wore balaclavas, opened fire with a handgun and a bullet grazed Mrs Ned’s shoulder before Mr Ned intervened and was shot in the chest. He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

Police say that they do not believe that the couple were the gunmen’s intended targets. However, they believe the killers targeted the house in Langdale Road and, at the time, Mr Ned’s stepson, a “reformed gang member” and rap artist known as Konan, was also living there.

Konan, 21, admitted he had been part of a gang known as Gipset but said he left the gang in 2005 and denied the attack was gang-related.

Witnesses described seeing the suspects leave the scene and jump into a silver car which sped off towards London Road. Detectives today released CCTV images showing a silver Ford Fiesta which travelled up London Road towards Stockwell. Detective Chief Inspector John Crossley, from Trident, said there was a £20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the gunmen.

He said: “We would like to appeal to anyone who has any information about this dreadful murder to come forward no matter how small you think it may be. Your information could be vital and it is not too late.”

Anyone with information should call the incident room on 020 8733 4212 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Five men have been arrested and bailed.
