Charlotte Church is to receive an undisclosed pay-out over claims her phone was hacked by the News of the World.

The 25-year-old singer has agreed a settlement with publisher News International following the lead of other celebrities and public figures such as Steve Coogan, Paul Gascoigne, Alastair Campbell and MP Simon Hughes.

Church claimed that 33 articles were the product of hacking into voicemails. The singer, who brought the action with her parents James and Maria Church, claimed the articles had a negative impact on the family's business and her mother's health.

Following the settlement, Mr Justice Vos must now decide who takes the lead role in any trial yet to be fixed, with outstanding claims by Princess Diana's "rock" Paul Burrell and Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs. Cherie Blair has also launched a claim against News Group Newspapers over "the unlawful interception of voicemails".

Former NoW editor Andy Coulson has been denied permission to appeal against a High Court decision that News Group Newspapers does not have to pay his potential legal costs over the phone-hacking affair.
