Singer Charlotte Church’s stepfather was beaten up after asking for cocaine at a party, a court heard.

James Church, 47, was left bleeding badly with stamp marks on the face, a fractured eye socket and two black eyes, it was claimed yesterday.

Reveller Robert Moore, 46, is accused of causing him grievous bodily harm in a snooker club lavatory.

Moore said of Mr Church in court: “He thinks he walks on water, that he’s God’s gift for some reason.” Mr Church was allegedly attacked as he celebrated New Year’s Eve with Charlotte’s mother Maria, 48.

Moore claims he saw Mr Church using cocaine at the party and was later asked by him if people were “doing” the drug. The two men later bumped into each other in the lavatory, where the violence erupted.

Prosecutor Jeremy Jenkins said: “Moore struck Mr Church on the head with a bottle, causing him to fall. While on the floor he was continuously kicked in the face and stamped on. Photographs showed footmarks to the forehead. It was a sustained and unprovoked attack resulting in serious injuries.”

Mrs Church told the jury: “I had never seen such a smashed-up face. When I saw him I went hysterical and screamed.”

Mr Church adopted ex-“Voice of an Angel” Charlotte, 26, in 1999.

The alleged attack happened at 4am on January 1 at the Cardiff club. Unemployed Moore, of Cardiff, claimed he acted in self-defence amid a scuffle. He denies grievous bodily harm with intent. The trial at the city’s crown court continues.
