Chelsea footballer Danny Drinkwater has been banned from the roads for 20 months after pleading guilty to drink driving.

The 29-year-old, who has previously been capped for England, has also been ordered to undertake 70 hours of community service.

He pleaded guilty to drink driving at Stockport Magistrates' Court when he appeared for a brief hearing before District Judge Mark Hadfield.

Drinkwater was two and a half times the legal limit when he crashed his £125,000 Range Rover through a wall at around 12.30am on April 8, in Mere, Cheshire.

The midfielder, who appeared at court in a navy suit with a blue tie, had two women passengers in the car.

He caused £50,000 damage to his car and suffered a graze to his forehead.

Subi Chowdhury, prosecuting, told the court Drinkwater himself called emergency services, admitting he had been drinking to police officers when they arrived.

The Sun previously reported he was with 33-year-old lawyer Beth Mantel at the time of the collision.

Drinkwater was one of Leicester City’s star players during the club’s Premier League-winning campaign in the 2015/16 season, with his performances earning his call up to the Three Lions squad.

However, he has failed to make a mark at Chelsea since his £35 million move to the London side.

He has not played a competitive match for the club's first team in 13 months.

Drinkwater also given a 12-month community order and ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs and an £85 victim surcharge.
