This is the moment a group of children dropped to the ground during an Easter egg hunt to aid police with a manhunt.

The quick-thinking schoolchildren, aged between six and 12, were playing in a field in Surrey on Good Friday when they noticed a police helicopter circling above them.

Officers had been dispatched to reports of a burglary at a building near the village of Capel.

As they scoured fields for two fleeing suspects, National Police Air Service (NPAS) officers spotted the group of eight children who were lying flat on the ground in the form of a giant arrow.

The canny helicopter cameraman quickly realised what the children were up to, and panned his shot to where the tip of the arrow was pointing.

Crime-fighters: The children point police in the direction of the suspect

He switched to the helicopter's thermal camera and swiftly spotted a figure crouching in some undergrowth.

The man was then arrested by officers on the ground.

NPAS Sergeant Paul Sochon said: “I’m sure the last thing the group of daring Capel residents expected when they set out on Friday afternoon was to abandon their Easter egg hunt to assist us in a police search.

“But the initiative they demonstrated proved to be invaluable.

“The swift action taken by the group of parents and their children was the sort of thing you would usually associate with an Enid Blyton adventure but their ingenuity proved a great help for our crews.”

Two men aged 28 and 27 were arrested on suspicion of burglary following the incident.

Both have been bailed pending further enquiries.
