A driver has admitted killing a 17-year-old girl as she crossed the road in east London.

Raqueeb Karim, 25, from Tower Hamlets, was behind the wheel of a silver Volkswagen Golf when he hit and fatally injured Fahmida Zaman opposite Stratford Centre shopping precinct.

A crowd of more than 50 people gathered at the scene as paramedics rushed her to hospital after the crash on The Broadway on July 6, 2015. She later died.

At a hearing before Judge John Bevan QC at the Old Bailey, Karim admitted causing death by his careless driving.

He pleaded not guilty to the more serious charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

He was granted bail as he awaits a five-day trial at the same court from January 2 next year.
