An elderly woman has died in an apparent shooting at a care home in Essex.

Police said they had launched a murder investigation after finding the woman, thought to be in her 80s, inside De La Mer House on Naze Park Road, Walton-on-the-Naze.

It is believed she was shot, Essex Police said.

A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder after officers were called at about 9am on Monday.

Both victim and suspect were residents of the care home, the force confirmed.

Detectives from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate are leading the inquiry.

DCI Simon Werrett said: "At this stage we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the investigation and our enquiries are ongoing.”

A care home worker told the Standard the residence, which she said looked after 45 elderly people, was helping the police with their inquiries.

Douglas Carswell, the Ukip MP for the area, said he was "very shocked" by the news, adding that Walton-on-the-Naze was usually a peaceful place.

He said: "It's very shocking. If you have got a loved one in a care home, you expect them to be safe.

"People need to know the exact circumstances of what happened, it is extremely disturbing.

"Walton-on-the-Naze is supposed to be one of the most peaceful and tranquil places there is - elderly people want to be in a peaceful and tranquil environment.

"Of all the places you expect this to happen, this is the last."
