Two men were attacked by a motorist who told an accomplice to 'get the axe' in a road rage row sparked when they tried to cross the street in moving traffic.

The father and son were set upon at traffic lights near Crouch Hall Road in Crouch End on Monday at around 3.30pm.

Police said the broad daylight attack took place after the victims, aged 55 and 30, tried to cross the road just after the lights had changed, causing a car to come to a sudden halt and sound its horn.

When the younger victim shouted: "What?!", the driver got out and began to punch him in the head and face repeatedly, with the passenger then also exiting the vehicle to set upon his dad.

Seeing his father being assaulted, the 30-year-old reached for a hammer in the bucket he was carrying, police said, prompting one of the attackers to shout to the other: "Get the axe."

Police said neither the axe nor hammer were ultimately used in the fight, with the assailants driving off after brandishing the axe at their victims.

Witnesses described the "shocking" scene.

“It was mental, there was blood trickling down the forehead of one of the geezers," one told told the Haringey Independent.

“When one screamed about the axe people were standing around shocked at what was going on.

“Next thing I know there were cars, people and police cars flying all over the place.”

Medics attended the scene but both victims refused treatment, police said.

Officers are yet to make any arrests.
