A man accused of mowing down a Muslim man in the Finsbury Park terror attack is due to face trial in the New Year.

Darren Osborne, 47, is accused of mowing down Akram Ali, 51, as he left an east London mosque after Ramadan prayers.

One man died and nine people were taken to hospital after a van crashed into a group of worshippers near the Finsbury Park mosque in the early hours of Monday June 19.

The area was busy with Muslim worshippers attending Ramadan night prayers at the time.

Osborne, 47, of Glyn Rhosyn, in Cardiff, is charged with the murder of Mr Ali and attempted murder.

He appeared at the Old Bailey via video link from Belmarsh prison wearing a dark grey T-shirt and light beige trousers.

The charges state he murdered Mr Ali on June 19 and attempted to murder "persons at the junction of Seven Sisters Road and Whadcoat Street, London" on the same date.

He spoke only to confirm his identity to the court before a timetable for his case was set out.

Mr Justice Holroyde set a trial for January 22 next year.

The trial is expected to go on for two weeks and will be heard at the Old Bailey.

It is expected to be prosecuted by senior barrister Jonathan Rees QC and presided over by Judge Richard Marks QC.

A plea hearing will take place on a date to be fixed in the week beginning November 13 before Judge Marks.

Osborne, who sat with his face covered by his hand, was remanded in custody.
