The captain of the ill-fated Germanwings plane that was crashed into the Alps screamed at co-pilot Andreas Lubitz to "open the goddamn door" during the flight's chilling final moments.

Patrick Sondheimer's desperate pleas have been revealed by black box transcripts, which also record passengers' terrified screams as they realised the aircraft was about to hurtle into a mountain.

The recording, obtained by German newspaper Bild, captures the full exchange between the two pilots, from a conversation about whether the flight is going to make up lost time to the moment the pilot exits the cockpit to go to the toilet.

Not long later the "sink rate" alarm sounds and Sondheimer can be heard banging on the cockpit door yelling: "For God's sake, open the door."

Workers scour wreckage as they work to recover bodies from the crash site

Then a "loud metallic banging against the cockpit door" is heard and another automated voice says: "Ground. Pull up. Pull up," over which the pilot screams: "Open the goddamn door."

Hurtling towards to the Alps, Lubitz can be heard breathing as he crashes the aircraft into a ravine.

The last sounds are screams from the 150 passengers who died on board.

Today leading British psychiatrist Professor Sir Simon Wessely warned against a knee-jerk reaction to the disaster - after it emerged Lubitz suffered from mental health problems.

Sir Simon told the Observer the aviation industry should not "rush" to action in the wake of the crash.
