A gang of six machete-wielding robbers raided a luxury jewellery store on Regent Street before reportedly fleeing on a single moped.

Police believe the suspects arrived on three vehicles before smashing open glass cabinets at Mappin & Webb with a hammer and machete.

They stole an array of high value goods before fleeing on two mopeds – abandoning one at the scene – just before 7.15pm.

They sped off towards Oxford Street where one of the mopeds crashed into another vehicle. Police said that all six suspects then piled on to the remaining vehicle as they fled again.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “At this early stage we believe this has been committed by six suspects who were riding three mopeds. Some of them were armed with a machete and a hammer.

“They entered the premises and smashed cabinets, stealing a high value of goods before escaping.”

The spokesperson added: “After leaving the scene, one of the mopeds carrying the suspects was involved in a collision on Oxford Street.

“The suspects who were on that moped were then picked up before all six fled on a single remaining moped.”

Police have not made any arrests and launched a manhunt for the robbers following the raid.

Witnesses tweeted pictures of the jewellers filled with smoke. Steve Ralfe posted: "Smash and grab at Regent Street jewellers. All three emergency services on scene, smoke deployed in the store."

Siobhain Butterworth wrote: "Seems to have been an attempted robbery at Mappin & Web on Regent Street. Getaway vehicle appears to have been scooter."

Mappin & Webb was founded in 1775 and customers have included Queen of France Marie Antoinette, Grace Kelly and Winston Churchill. It opened its flagship Regent Street store in 2016.
