A woman has described the moment she saw several people with "blood all over them" during a major incident in Glasgow city centre.

Armed police have shot dead a suspect while six other people including a police officer were injured and taken to hospital after the stabbing.

Emergency services cordoned off a large area around West George Street after the incident, which started around 1.30pm on Friday.

Speaking to Sky News, an unnamed woman said: "In the aftermath, I saw people being treated who had blood all over them - there was blood on the ground.

"I saw people running out of the hotel with the police shouting 'put your hands up'.

"There were police cars, ambulances, all over the street. They cordoned it off and they were shouting to people in other buildings, away from the Park Inn Hotel, to stay inside and to not come out into the streets."

She added: "There were quite a number of people coming out with their hands up, running down the steps of the hotel. I saw people with blood all over them, with blood on the ground, in a trail."

Witness Craig Milroy, who saw the aftermath of the incident from an office building nearby, said he had seen four people taken away in ambulances.

“I saw a man lying on the ground, of African descent, with no shoes on," he said. "He was on the ground with someone holding his side – I don’t know if it was a bullet wound, a stab wound, or what it was.”

Mr Milroy said the man was one of the people taken away by medics and believed him to be a victim of an attack.

“After that we saw commotion, ambulances further up and we saw armed police all running into the hotel next to the Society Room," he said.

“We were still standing outside, after that the police all came down, the riot police and triage team told us to go back in and lock the door.”

The police officer who was injured in the attack in a critical but stable condition, Police Scotland assistant chief constable Steve Johnson confirmed.

“We are continuing to deal with the incident on West George Street, Glasgow, and would ask people to avoid the area," he said.

"We would urge the public not to speculate about this incident or share unconfirmed information on social media."

Mr Johnson added: "I would like to reassure the public that this is a contained incident and that the wider public is not at risk."
