The gang involved in the Hatton Garden safe deposit heist escaped with gems and cash worth up to £20 million - more than double the original estimate, it has emerged.

Detectives now believe that a “significant amount” of stolen items remain missing after the raid in which thieves dressed as builders drilled through concrete walls of the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Company to gain access to the firm’s vault over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

Initially, Scotland Yard said it had recovered the majority of the valuables stolen in the raid, contained in three holdalls and estimated to be worth around £10 million.

However, officers have spent the past months cataloguing the goods recovered and now believe an “enormous amount of jewellery” worth “between £15 million and £20 million ” was stolen.

The details emerged at a pre-trial hearing involving one of nine suspects at Woolwich Crown Court yesterday.

Prosecutor Philip Evans said: “It’s fair to say the amount which has been recovered is very significantly less than the amount taken.

Police released the astonishing images today showing the inside of the vault

“The process of identifying those figures is long and complex but the Crown states a significant amount of jewellery is outstanding.”

The nine men, whose ages range from 42 to 76, are due to stand trial in November accused of conspiracy to burgle.
