A teenager killed after he was repeatedly stabbed in broad daylight has tonight been named by police.

Detectives confirmed Lance Walker, 18, as the victim of the fatal attack in Hayes which took place on Monday afternoon.

A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as stab wounds.

An 18-year-old man was arrested near the scene in Gledwood Gardens on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Scotland Yard said the suspect and Mr Walker were known to each other and that the victim was initially attacked at a home in the street.

He died at the scene despite desperate efforts by paramedics. Witnesses screamed in horror as the attack unfolded in front of young children.

One told the Standard: "I thought it was just kids playing around.

"I wish I could have helped, I wish I could have done something."

Eyewitness Gurdeep Chaggar, 47, a single father, said: "My daughters who are 11 and 12 came running in and said there was a guy stabbing another guy with a big knife. She came flying up the stairs to tell me.

"I got some towels and put pressure on his wounds. I have done a first aid course so knew what to do."

Earlier today neighbours described how they had heard shouting shortly before the stabbing.

One said: "There was shouting like an argument in the street and the next thing we knew there were ambulances and police cars racing past."

The murder investigation is being led by detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command.

Detective Chief Inspector Noel McHugh said: "We are still in the early stages of our investigation and whilst we have a man in custody we still require the help of the public to understand the full facts which led to Lance's death.

"The incident occurred in broad daylight and there were a number of people in and around Gledwood Gardens that afternoon who either witnessed the lead up to the incident or the murder itself.

"It is imperative that anyone who has any information that could assist us with our investigation contacts us as soon as possible.

“I would like to reassure those who have concerns about making contact with the police; the information you hold could be significant to our investigation so please do the right thing and come forward."

Any witnesses or anyone with any information for detectives are urged to contact the incident room on 020 8785 8099 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via crimestoppers-uk.org
