A machete-wielding thug who carried out a string of burglaries in charity shops and local businesses in south London has been jailed.

Adam Pollitt, 32, was sentenced to four years and 11 months behind bars at Croydon Crown Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to various offences.

The tattooed Arsenal fan, from Croydon, stormed into a convenience store on Lower Addiscombe Road brandishing a machete in July.

He demanded money from the till but the shopkeeper instead set off the alarm and Pollitt scarpered empty-handed.

The botched burglary was one of many incidents which led to his eventual arrest in July thanks to forensics and CCTV.

Police also discovered Pollitt was responsible for a number of charity shop burglaries where he had gained entry by smashing his way through the door.

In total he pleaded guilty to committing six burglaries in the space of three days from June 28-30, as well as the failed attempt in August.
