A landlord has been fined more than £40,000 for cramming 14 people into a converted three-bedroom house in west London.

Sohaib Anwar converted the property in Noel Road, Acton, into a nine-bedroom house and charged his tenants up to £400 per month each in rent.

The group were also forced to share kitchen and bathroom facilities, Ealing Council said.

Investigators told him to return the property to a single-family home and remove one of the extra kitchens he had installed, but when he ignored their warnings he was taken to court.

Anwar was eventually fined £41,557.95 last week after he admitted breaching planning permission regulations at Ealing Magistrates Court.

Council leader, councillor Julian Bell, said: "Mr Anwar was given several chances to comply with planning laws, but instead chose to line his own pockets.

"The council is committed to improving the quality of privately rented accommodation and to increasing the supply of rented property but we will come down very hard on bad landlords who break planning or environmental health rules and exploit their tenants."
