Millwall fans today stormed security barriers at Wembley Stadium after losing the club’s League One play-off final against Barnsley.

Barnsley were leading 3-1, just seconds away from promotion, when rival fans broke through a police barrier.

Several videos taken by fans inside the ground showed supporters in Millwall shirts apparently running towards Barnsley’s end of the stadium.

The Barnsley supporters, with children among them, were forced to move further into their section or flee the stadium to avoid the trouble.

One Twitter user, named Ben, who shared one of the videos, tweeted: “Running from the other end of the ground to go and attack Barnsley fans. There are families fleeing. Disgrace.”

Another account, Football Away Days, also posted video footage from inside the ground and wrote: "Millwall fans broke through police barrier and charging after the Barnsley supporters."

Mark Wijnberg wrote: “Everybody’s leaving. Millwall broke through security barriers… insane.”

In a statement, Millwall said it deplored the actions of a small minority of its fans and that anyone found guilty of disorder would face a lifetime ban from the club.

Police said 15 people had been arrested on suspicion of public order offences and that no serious injuries had been reported.

Officers confirmed they were investigating an altercation between fans inside the ground, which started at about 4.35pm.

A Met Police spokesman said: "No arrests have been made at this stage and enquires continue.

"The Metropolitan Police Service will conduct a review and will liaise with the Football Association and the two clubs involved to indentify those responsible and where necessary take the appropriate action."

A spokesman for the FA said: "The FA condemns the disorder caused by a small number of fans at today’s League One Play Off final between Barnsley and Millwall at Wembley Stadium.

"We will work closely with the clubs, the Football League and the Met Police to identify those involved and take appropriate action.

"We would like to take this opportunity to praise the actions of our stewards and the police, who responded responsibly under provocation."
