A man and a woman were arrested by armed police after being spotted with a replica firearm in south London.

Police officers on patrol in Rushey Green, Lewisham identified a man and woman who they believed initially to be holding a live firearm at 2pm on Wednesday.

Specialist firearms officers were quickly deployed to the shopping district to detain the man and woman.

In their search police recovered an item believed to be an imitation firearm.

They were both arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a firearm in a public place.

Police said no shots were fired and their arrest is not being treated as terror-related.

Officers added they are not looking for any further suspects and there is no risk to the public.
