Leytonstone murder investigation underway after man, 33, stabbed to death

A murder investigation has been launched after a young man was stabbed in east London.

Police were scrambled to reports of a fight in South Birkbeck Road, Leytonstone at 11.15pm on Thursday.

Officers attended and found a 33-year-old man suffering knife injuries.

They administered emergency first aid alongside paramedics from the London Ambulance Service.

However the victim died at the scene. His next of kin are yet to be informed.

A post-mortem examination will be held in due course. A crime scene remains in place.

A 34-year-old man arrested at the address on suspicion of murder remains in custody at an east London police station.

Early enquiries have established he was known to the man who died.

Police are trawling through CCTV from around the scene and carrying out door to door inquiries. Meanwhile, forensics officers are scouring for clues.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Rogers, from the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “While a man has been arrested and our investigation is making progress, I am still keen to hear from anyone who lived in the local area and may have seen or heard anything that could help us.

“We have already spoken to a number of people as we piece together the events that led to this tragic incident. However, if you can assist our investigation then please get in contact.”

Chief Superintendent Dan Card, responsible for policing in Waltham Forest and Newham, added: “I understand and share the shock that a violent incident like this will have on the local Leytonstone community.

“However, I want to reassure residents that an experienced team of specialist officers is already diligently working to established what happened.

“Residents will see an increased police presence in the area over coming days, including local officers.

“I would ask anyone with concerns to approach and talk to them, or alternatively speak with your local Safer Neighbourhoods team.”
