Police have launched an appeal after a man was punched while pushing his niece in a pram, leaving him needing three rounds of surgery, in West Norwood.

The man, in his 40s, was walking along Chapel Road about 1pm on November 26 when he accidentally ran over another man’s foot,

The man reacted by punching the victim so hard that he broke his eye socket. When police arrived on scene, the man’s eye was bleeding profusely and he was rushed to a north London hospital.

He was left needing three courses of surgery on the eye.

Police have released an image of a man they want to speak to in connection with the attack. He is described as being aged in his 30s, about 5ft 9 and of slim build.

Detective Constable Szilvi Jokai said: “There is absolutely no justifiable reason to attack someone so furiously that they require repeat surgery.

“But to brutally beat someone in front of a child, for what was an accident, is inexcusable.

“The attack was extremely distressing for the victim and we are determined to bring the person responsible to justice. We will not tolerate violence in any form.

“If you recognise the man in the photograph, or have any information about the attack, then please do get in touch with us.”

Anyone who recognises the man in the photo, or has information about the incident, is being asked to call police on 101 or tweet @MetCC quoting CAD 3019/26NOV.
