A group of 11 men who drove more than 150 miles from London to the Peak District before flipping a car in a smash have been fined for breaking Covid-19 regulations.

Derbyshire Police said the men were spread across three cars when one crashed and overturned on the A6013 near Bamford on Monday evening.

The men, from Harrow, were handed a £200 fine for travelling between Tier 4 areas, the force said.

One man was also treated for minor injuries.

Locals complained of drivers speeding around the quiet, countryside hamlet of Bamford on the police post.

Police added they seized one of the three vehicles, which was uninsured, and the driver was "sent home on the train".

Under the new lockdown measures that came into force today the Metropolitan Police announced they were going to be issuing fines more quickly “to anyone committing obvious, wilful and serious breaches.”

They added this meant those attending illegal raves or gatherings could expect to be fined - not just the organisers of events.

Anyone not wearing a mask in areas where they should be could expect to be fined -not reasoned with - the force said.

It came after a Metropolitan Police federation leader warned enforcing the new national lockdown in London will put “a lot of pressure” on Scotland Yard, which already has around 1,300 officers ill or self-isolating.

On New Year alone, the Metropolitan Police said 217 people were issued with fixed penalty fines after officers attended 58 unlicensed music events and parties.
