A Londoner who attempted to travel to Syria to join ISIS from Gatwick Airport has been jailed.

Patrick Kabele, 33, tried to board a flight to Sabiha Gokcen Airport in Istanbul when he was arrested on August 20 last year.

He was found guilty of preparation of terrorist acts and sentenced to six years in prison on Tuesday.

When Kabele was searched, officers found a number of electronic devices that revealed his plans to travel to Syria and join the terrorist group.

Police also seized £3,000 along with the devices.

He refused to answer questions about his travel plans, Scotland Yard said. And when he continued to answer no comment he was arrested.

On August 24, officers raided his home and arrested him on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts. He was charged the following day.

Commander Dean Haydon, of the Met's Counter Terrorism Command, said: "Kabele's intention to join ISIS is made very clear in his own notes.

“Due to the good work of officers at the airport, who spotted Kabele and questioned him, as well as the investigation team who pieced the case together, we have prevented someone from travelling to fight for a terrorist group."

At his sentencing at Woolwich Crown Court, Kabele, of north-west London, was ordered to serve a further four years on license when released from jail.
