A man accused of having sex with a Shetland pony has denied the allegations against him, claiming he is not sexually attracted to horses, a court has heard.

Alan Barnfield, 44, told detectives he had no sexual interest in animals after he was charged with the offence, which is alleged to have been carried out on a farm near Doncaster in 2012, Sheffield Crown Court heard.

His police interviews, in which he repeatedly denied the alleged attack, were read to the jury today.

He described how had he gone for a late night walk by the farm and had fed grass to the larger of two horses.

But he insisted that the smaller horse would not come over to him and denied stepping over the fence into its field.

The officers asked him directly "have you ever had sex with a horse" and "have you ever touched any animal in a sexual way".

Jurors were told he answered "no" to these questions.

He also said he did not know how a video of a man having sex with a horse and other bestiality images got onto his phone, the court heard.

Prosecutors have told the jury that police interviewed Barnfield after people living near stables at the village of Loversall rang officers because they thought he was going to steal horses when they spotted him in the early hours of August 8, 2012.

They told police he was sweating profusely and smelled strongly of horses when officers arrived.

The prosecution case is that Barnfield, of Hexthorpe Lane, Hexthorpe, Doncaster, assaulted the pony called Sky with two bottles before having sex with it.

The jury was told that investigators found horse DNA on Barnfield after the alleged incident.

The trial continues.
