A man has been charged after a woman’s body and a seriously injured man were found at a home in Essex.

Police were initially called to reports of an assault in Pines Road, Chelmsford, at about 1.30am on Sunday, but a 48-year-old woman, named by police as Colleen Westlake, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 59-year-old man was found with “serious life-threatening injuries” and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Craig Bird, 31, of no fixed abode, was today charged with Ms Westlake’s murder and the attempted murder of the 59-year-old man.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
