A man has been charged in connection with vandalism of the RAF Bomber Command War Memorial, police said.

Andrew Patterson, 31, will appear in court next month accused of criminal damage to the memorial in Green Park, central London, on May 27, Scotland Yard said.

The memorial was targeted twice in just over a week following the murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby in Woolwich, south east London, on May 22.

Patterson is also charged with the same offence in connection with damage caused the same day to the Animals in War Memorial in Hyde Park, which honours animals that have served and died for the British military forces.

Police said he was also charged with theft and criminal damage in connection at the Rising Sun Australian war memorial in Hyde Park between May 17 and 20 last year.

Patterson, of Westminster, faces a total of 94 charges of criminal damage and going equipped for theft and criminal damage, a police spokesman said.

He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on April 30.
