A 41-year-old man has been charged with trespass after an intruder was allegedly found in the grounds of Buckingham Palace having scaled a perimeter wall.

Dennis Hennessy, from Wembley, was charged on Thursday with trespass on a protected site and criminal damage.

He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court later today.

The alarm was raised at the Queen's central London residence shortly after 8.30pm on Wednesday evening.

Police discovered a man in the grounds of the Palace seven minutes later.

It is understood the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were both in at the time of the alleged trespass.

A spokesman for Buckingham Palace said it would not comment on a security matter.
