A man has been charged with causing the death of a London cyclist by dangerous driving, police said.

Driver Jan Junaid, 47, allegedly knocked engineer David Blake off his bike as he cycled to work on December 6, 2014.

The 57-year-old suffered head injuries after being thrown from the saddle in the collision on Leman Street near Aldgate, east London. He died in hospital the following day.

Junaid, of Ellen Street, east London, was charged on Wednesday and is due to appear at Thames Magistrates' Court on July 22, the Metropolitan Police said.

Following his death, friends of Mr Blake spoke of how he had become a "cycling addict" after giving up riding a motorcycle because a series of minor incidents convinced him it was too dangerous.

Colin Bilton, a former colleague, told the Standard: “He got rid of his motorbike because it was too dangerous. He’d had a couple of accidents, a few narrow scrapes, and he thought cycling was safer, so he took it up.

“After that he used to go everywhere on his bike. I can’t believe he died on his bike."
