A murder investigation is underway after a man was found dead and a woman suffered serious injuries at a pub in Tottenham.

Police were called by the London Ambulance Service at about 11.30am on Wednesday after paramedics found two injured people in residential rooms in the Bill Nicholson, close to White Hart Lane.

Officers discovered the body of a man, believed to be in his mid-30s, at the Northumberland Park Road pub and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman, who is also believed to be in her mid-30s, had suffered multiple injuries and was rushed to hospital where she is fighting for her life.

Police described the woman's condition as critical but stable.

One resident who drinks at the Tottenham-supporting pub, which is named after the club's former manager, said it only opens on match days, and that there are never any problems as it is a quiet area.

It is understood Celebrity Big Brother star Danniella Westbrook works at the pub on match days - pulling pints and collecting glasses.

Wishing to remain anonymous, another man told the Press Association: "We are all really shocked. It is a community pub."

The man said he saw the police and emergency services arrive at the premises at around 11.45am.

He said he believed the couple who live at the back of the property were Eastern European, saying their relationship was "troubled," as they were "always arguing".

"Someone that lives there said the man suffered many stab wounds and the lady had her throat cut," he added.

Delivery driver Dogan Karkas added: "I've heard someone got stabbed and has been there for a few days."

The man and woman have not yet been identified.

Officers said a post-mortem examination for the man would be scheduled in due course.

Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Chalmers, from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, is leading the investigation.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: "Enquiries continue. There have been no arrests at this stage."

Anyone with information is asked to call police via 101 or to remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
