A pedestrian caught on camera pushing a woman cyclist off her bike into oncoming traffic has turned himself in, police said today.

The 33-year-old man handed himself in at Bethnal Green Police Station at around 1.30pm on Tuesday after footage of the incident was shared thousands of times.

The man has not been arrested but will be questioned by police.

Footage of the incident was shared online thousands of times by cyclists and road safety groups.

The helmet camera footage showed him crossing Whitechapel Road in front of the 41-year-old cyclist who told him: “Please don’t try and knock me off.”

Seconds later the footage shows him sprint after the woman and hurling a volley of abuse before he said: “You want to put your finger up to me, you mug?”

He then pushed her sideways into the path of a black car at the junction with Sydney Street.

The footage was released by Scotland Yard detectives following the incident at around 6pm on May 1 this year.

A police spokesman said: “At around 1.30pm on Tuesday a 33-year-old man attended Bethnal Green police station and identified himself as the man shown in a video released by the Met of an attack on a female cyclist in Whitechapel.

“The man was not arrested. He will be interviewed by officers from Tower Hamlets in due course."
